Innovation Offshore: Sometimes the Smarter Solution Is Already There
Sometimes, the biggest innovation is not about inventing something new. It is about finding a smarter way to use what already exists. That principle was at the heart of this CAN installation, where engineering and operational planning came together to challenge a conventional approach to offshore execution.
From concept to offshore reality
One of the key objectives during the engineering phase was clear: design the CAN installation so it could be performed from an AHTS vessel, eliminating the need for a dedicated crane vessel. This was not simply a vessel substitution.
Making the concept work required the installation methodology, equipment interfaces, handling procedures, and offshore sequence to be considered as an integrated system. Engineering decisions had to reflect the realities of offshore operations from the very beginning.
Through detailed engineering, careful operational planning, and close coordination, the concept was successfully translated into offshore execution.
The result?
Two CAN installation operations were successfully completed using an AHTS vessel, with installation times of just 12 hours and 16 hours respectively.
Why does this matter?
Crane vessels provide significant lifting and installation capabilities, but those capabilities can also come with considerable cost, mobilization requirements, and scheduling constraints.
If the installation can instead be engineered around a more readily available AHTS vessel, the economics and flexibility of the offshore campaign can change significantly.
