Efficient field development is crucial in the offshore oil and gas industry, where rig costs often represent a significant portion of total expenses. Innovative solutions that reduce rig days, streamline operations, and enhance safety are in high demand. Neodrill's CAN-parking technology is proving to be one such solution, demonstrating significant cost savings and operational efficiency in subsea environments.

What Is CAN-Parking Technology?

CAN-parking is a robust subsea well foundation solution developed by Neodrill. Initially designed to improve well foundation installation, the CAN technology has evolved to serve additional applications. CAN-parking provides a secure and efficient platform for handling heavy subsea equipment, such as Christmas trees (XTs) and Blowout Preventers (BOPs), streamlining their storage and deployment processes.

Recent Installation in the Norwegian Sea

On November 27, two CAN-parking units were installed on a greenfield site on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). These units, positioned near a subsea manifold template, will facilitate the wet parking of XTs. By pre-parking the XTs in good weather conditions, the installation phase becomes less dependent on rig availability, reducing delays caused by adverse weather and minimizing operational risks.

The benefits of wet parking XTs on CAN-parking units include:

  • Eliminating BOP re-runs: Avoiding the need to retrieve and re-run the

BOP between XT installations saves significant rig time.

  • Reducing onboard equipment: Keeping XTs off the rig reduces equipment and space requirements, lowering offshore service crew numbers and associated safety risks.

  • Enhancing operational safety: Minimizing crew and equipment interactions offshore decreases environmental, health, and safety (EHS) risks.

Proven Benefits from Previous Projects

The CAN-parking technology has previously been used on brownfield sites with impressive results. In one instance, a Horizontal XT (HXT) was removed from a well slot and temporarily stored on a CAN-parking unit. The BOP, serving as a running tool, facilitated the operation. This approach allowed the BOP to return to the well slot for a sidetrack operation while the parked HXT underwent a health check using a subsea Workover Control System. Once the sidetrack was completed, the HXT was reinstalled, bypassing the need for onshore retrieval and maintenance.

Key benefits observed in this project included:

  • Significant rig time savings.

  • Reduced equipment handling and maintenance requirements.

  • Enhanced safety from fewer rig-based operations.

A Sustainable Future for Subsea Operations

After completing their use on the current greenfield site, the CAN-parking units will be relocated and reused at other fields, bypassing the need for onshore transport. This operational flexibility underscores the sustainable nature of CAN-parking technology, offering both environmental and economic advantages.

Looking Ahead

Neodrill’s CAN-parking technology continues to provide value for offshore

operators, enabling safer, faster, and more cost-effective subsea field

developments. As more operators adopt this solution, Neodrill anticipates

further innovation and applications for the technology.
